Raytown Middle School student Nahrya Williams is the recipient of a 2016 Vincent Legacy Scholarship from Starlight Theatre.  Williams is one of only two winners of the $2500 scholarship for the year and was surprised at her school during one of her classes.

The scholarship has been awarded since 2006 to qualified and deserving middle school students throughout metropolitan Kansas City. Funded by former Starlight Board members and longtime Starlight supporters Greg and Rebecca Reid, the scholarship provides ethnically diverse youth in the opportunity to pursue professional training in the performing arts.

“I am very surprised and grateful to receive this,” Williams said.

To qualify, students in grades 6, 7 and 8 must display talent and passion for the performing arts; be nominated by a current instructor; have strong grades, attendance and interest in community service; and audition for Starlight’s scholarship committee. Williams can use the money to continue her training in the arts.

William’s mother, grandparents, members of Starlight’s Education Department, donors Greg and Rebecca Reid, Starlight President and CEO Rich Baker, Starlight’s Director of Communication Barb Schulte, her voice and piano teachers and choir director, and Raytown Middle School Principal Dr. Georgetta May, along with classmates were in attendance during the surprise announcement, where Williams received a giant check.

“ I love to sing and to perform, so this is very important to me,” Williams said, as she thanked those gathered.
